Homework Expectations
When parents and schools work together, it has an incredibly positive impact on attainment and pupil well-being. This is why it is so important that we work together from your child’s first day at school right through to when they leave us. Children need to know that learning doesn’t only happen at school – it takes place at home too, and we hope that the expectations outlined below will help you to engage and support your child in their learning at home.
Early Years
Nursery
Share Nursery Rhymes and stories that are on their class page. Daily, talk to your child about themes that are on the Nursery class page on the school website.
Reception
Children will receive tasks such as name writing, letter formation, number formation.
Key Stages 1 and 2
Spelling
Every week, children in Years 3-6 will have a list of spellings for the spelling rule that they are learning in class. The list will be stuck into their Reading Records to be practised at home. Children will be tested on their spellings weekly and your child’s teacher will inform you which day spelling lessons take place.
School have supplied a lined exercise book for children to keep at home along with a list of the year group spellings and some ideas for practising and learning spellings.
Reading
All children who take part in Read, Write Inc. Phonics lessons will be allocated, via Oxford Owl online, the book which their group is reading that week. Their login can be found in the front of their Reading Record book. https://www.oxfordowl.co.uk
Children who have completed the Phonics lessons have access to Oxford Reading Buddy where there is an online library of ability based books for your child to read. This program uses ‘reading buddies’ to prompt your child as they make their way through the books and at the end of books there is a quiz. Once children have an average score of 80% across the level, they will move onto the next level of books. Children also have a ‘Reading for Pleasure’ book which they choose themselves from the class library. This is to share at home and it is expected that good care is taken of the book. Lost or damaged books will incur a like-for-like replacement cost.
All of our children are expected to read at home at least four times per week with an adult recording their reading in the child’s Reading Record book.
Reading Records will be checked every Friday by staff in your child’s class. Children who have met the expectation of reading at least four times per week will be rewarded with 5 DoJo points.
It is important that children’s Reading Records are brought into school every day so that if reading books are changed, they can be recorded and so that spellings can be stuck in.
Maths
Basic maths skills are to be practised at home. At Brownhills West we use Numbots and Time Tables Rock Stars to help children do this and logins for these programmes can be found in the front of your child’s Reading Record.

There is no need to record these sessions in your child’s Reading Record as we can see online how many sessions have been completed.
If you do not have Internet access, paper based activities will be provided for your child.
Every Friday, staff in your child’s class will monitor maths homework. Children who have met the expectation will be rewarded with 5 DoJo points.
Wider Curriculum
Occasionally, we may ask children to complete other tasks linked to subjects in the wider curriculum. This will be clearly communicated to you.
